Severe Allergic Reactions: Is Your Family Prepared?
When Allergy Becomes an Emergency
Most allergic reactions are uncomfortable but manageable: hives, sneezing, watery eyes. But anaphylaxis — a severe, systemic allergic reaction — can kill within minutes if not treated immediately. It occurs when the immune system overreacts so dramatically that blood pressure drops, airways close, and the body enters shock.
Triggers Common in Nigeria

- Foods — groundnuts (peanuts) are the most common trigger; cashews, shrimp, crayfish, and dairy also cause severe reactions in sensitised individuals
- Insect stings — particularly wasp and bee stings
- Medications — penicillin, aspirin, NSAIDs, and contrast dyes used in imaging
- Latex — relevant for healthcare workers and those who have had multiple surgeries
Recognising Anaphylaxis
Symptoms develop within seconds to 30 minutes of exposure:
- Rapid spread of hives over the body
- Swelling of lips, tongue, or throat
- Breathing difficulty — wheezing, stridor, inability to speak
- Collapse, dizziness, or loss of consciousness
- Rapid, weak pulse
What to Do Immediately
- Administer adrenaline (epinephrine) into the outer thigh immediately if available
- Lay the person flat with legs raised (unless breathing is difficult — then sit upright)
- Call for emergency help and transport to hospital
- A second dose of adrenaline can be given after 5–15 minutes if no improvement
