Recognising Serious vs. Mild Reactions

Mild (expected): Pain, localised redness and swelling at the sting site, itching lasting a few hours. Treat with cold compress, antihistamine, and mild pain relief.

Serious — seek medical help immediately:

• Swelling spreading beyond the immediate area rapidly
• Hives appearing elsewhere on the body
• Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or throat tightness
• Dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or a sense of impending doom
• Loss of consciousness

Who Is at Higher Risk of Severe Reactions

• Previous allergic reactions to insect stings
• Known allergies to any substance
• Mastocytosis (a mast cell disorder)
• Taking beta-blocker medications (these can worsen reactions and reduce adrenaline response)
