Scalp and Body Parasites: Practical Management in Lagos

By FXMed Team

External Parasites Are a Public Health Issue, Not a Hygiene Failure

Head lice, body lice, and pubic lice affect people regardless of socioeconomic status or cleanliness. In Lagos's dense, interconnected communities — schools, markets, public transport, barbing salons — transmission is common. The stigma that surrounds these conditions in Nigeria prevents many families from seeking help promptly, allowing infestations to persist and spread.

Head Lice — Especially Common in Children

Head lice spread by direct head-to-head contact. Signs include: persistent scalp itching (particularly at the back of the head and behind the ears), visible nits (eggs, cemented to hair shafts close to the scalp), and visible lice. They do not spread disease — but secondary skin infections from scratching can develop.

Body Lice — A Marker of Difficulty

Unlike head and pubic lice, body lice live in clothing seams rather than on the body. They are associated with inability to regularly change and wash clothing. They can transmit serious bacterial diseases (typhus, relapsing fever) — making identification and treatment urgent in communities where these infections are present.

Effective Treatment

  • Head lice: Permethrin 1% lotion or malathion 0.5% — applied, left for appropriate time, combed through with fine-tooth comb; repeat in 7 days. All household members should be checked and treated simultaneously.
  • Body lice: Primarily addressed by laundering and replacing infested clothing and bedding in hot water (above 60°C); permethrin cream for body treatment
  • Treat the environment: Combs, hats, bedding, and clothing need attention alongside personal treatment
