Enlarged Heart: What It Means and What to Do

By FXMed Team

Understanding Your Chest X-Ray Report

Being told your heart is "enlarged" on a chest X-ray — or seeing "cardiomegaly" in a radiology report — is frightening without explanation. In Nigeria, where follow-up after incidental imaging findings is often inadequate, many people live with this finding for years without understanding what it means or what to do.

What Causes an Enlarged Heart

The heart enlarges when it must work harder than normal over time, or when the heart muscle itself is diseased:

  • Hypertension — the most common cause in Nigeria; the left ventricle thickens and eventually dilates under chronic pressure
  • Cardiomyopathy — heart muscle disease; can be dilated (weakened, stretched heart) or hypertrophic
  • Peripartum cardiomyopathy — specifically affecting Nigerian women; occurs in the last month of pregnancy (see our antenatal care guide) or first 5 months after delivery; Nigeria has the highest rates globally
  • Valvular disease — damaged heart valves cause the heart to work harder to compensate
  • Anaemia — severe chronic anaemia forces the heart to pump more blood to compensate for low oxygen-carrying capacity
  • Thyroid (see our hormones guide) disease — both hypo- and hyperthyroidism affect cardiac function

The Essential Investigation

Chest X-ray tells you the heart is enlarged but not why. Echocardiogram (cardiac ultrasound) is the definitive next step — revealing heart size, function, valve integrity, and wall motion. FXMed facilitates echocardiogram referral and reviews results with you in context.

Supporting Heart Health Functionally

Beyond cardiology management, FXMed addresses the metabolic contributors: blood pressure optimisation, nutritional support (CoQ10, magnesium, omega-3s, vitamin D), thyroid correction, and anaemia treatment. These measurably improve cardiac function when addressed alongside conventional care.
