When Blood in Urine Means More Than an Infection
Blood in the Urine Is Never Normal
Whether you can see blood in your urine (gross haematuria) or it's found incidentally on a routine dipstick (microscopic haematuria), it always warrants proper investigation. In Nigeria, blood in urine is almost reflexively attributed to urinary tract infection — and while UTI is common, it doesn't cause visible bleeding without other symptoms, and microscopic haematuria often has other causes entirely.
Causes That Must Be Investigated
FXMed tip: If any of this sounds familiar, our Functional Health Analysis may be exactly what you need. Book a free assessment to find out where your health stands today.
- Kidney stones — very common in Nigeria; cause colicky pain and bleeding as stones move through the urinary tract
- Urinary tract infection — but typically with frequency, burning, and urgency as well
- Schistosomiasis — urinary schistosomiasis (bilharzia) is endemic in parts of Nigeria and causes painless haematuria; chronically mismanaged in Nigerian healthcare
- Bladder pathology — tumours and polyps cause painless bleeding, often in older adults; requires cystoscopic investigation
- Kidney disease — glomerulonephritis and IgA nephropathy cause haematuria with or without other symptoms
- Prostate conditions — in men over 50, benign prostatic enlargement and prostate cancer must be considered
FXMed's Urological Health Assessment
We run: urine microscopy and culture, urine cytology (looking for abnormal cells), renal function panel, PSA in men over 45, and schistosomiasis serology. Based on results, we facilitate urgent referral for imaging or cystoscopy where needed.
Don't Wait and Watch
Even one episode of visible blood in urine requires investigation. Book a consultation with FXMed today — we can arrange home blood and urine collection and coordinate any specialist referrals needed.
