Blood Cancer in Children: Warning Signs Nigerian Parents Must Know

By FXMed Team

Childhood Leukaemia Is Curable

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) — the most common childhood cancer — has cure rates exceeding 90% in high-income countries. In Nigeria, outcomes are dramatically worse — not because the cancer is different, but because diagnosis comes late, treatment access is limited, and abandonment of treatment is common due to cost. Earlier diagnosis and better-informed families improve these outcomes significantly.

Warning Signs in Children

  • Pallor — pale gums, pale inner eyelids, pale skin; often the first sign parents notice
  • Unexplained bruising — particularly in unusual locations (back, face, trunk) without trauma
  • Petechiae — tiny, flat red or purple spots on the skin from microscopic bleeding; look like a rash that doesn't fade on pressure
  • Persistent fever without clear infection source
  • Bone pain — particularly leg pain at night; children may refuse to walk
  • Lymph node swelling — neck, armpit, or groin; painless and persisting beyond 4 weeks
  • Abdominal swelling — from spleen or liver enlargement
  • Fatigue (see our guide to chronic fatigue in Lagos) and loss of interest in normal activities

The Investigation That Makes the Diagnosis

A full blood count (see our guide to understanding your blood tests) (FBC) with differential is the first critical investigation. Abnormal white cell count, very low haemoglobin or platelets, or the presence of blast cells on blood film requires urgent haematology or paediatric oncology referral. FXMed arranges urgent blood investigation and facilitates specialist referral immediately when results are concerning.
