Irregular Heartbeat: What Atrial Flutter Means for Your Health

By FXMed Team

Not Just Fast Heartbeat — a Specific Arrhythmia

Atrial flutter is a cardiac arrhythmia in which the upper chambers of the heart (atria) beat in a rapid, regular circuit — typically 250–350 beats per minute — while the ventricles beat at half this rate (2:1 block), producing a rapid but regular pulse of 125–175 bpm. It is less common than atrial fibrillation but shares its most serious complication: elevated stroke risk from clot formation in the heart.

Symptoms of Atrial Flutter

  • Rapid, regular palpitations — "heart racing" at a consistent fast rate
  • Breathlessness, particularly on exertion
  • Chest discomfort or pressure
  • Fatigue (see our guide to chronic fatigue in Lagos) from reduced cardiac efficiency
  • In some patients: dizziness or presyncope

Why Atrial Flutter Develops

Atrial flutter almost always occurs in the context of an underlying condition that has caused atrial remodelling:

  • Hypertension — the most common cause in Nigeria; pressure overload enlarges and scars the atria
  • Heart failure — elevated filling pressures drive atrial dilation
  • Thyroid (see our hormones guide) disease — hyperthyroidism is a classic cause; MUST be excluded in every new arrhythmia patient
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Alcohol consumption — "holiday heart" effect

Management and Functional Support

Atrial flutter typically requires rate or rhythm control medication and anticoagulation (blood thinning) to reduce stroke risk. Catheter ablation has very high success rates for flutter. Functionally, FXMed addresses modifiable drivers: thyroid correction, blood pressure optimisation, alcohol reduction, magnesium supplementation, and sleep apnoea assessment.
