Pregnancy Scans and What They Really Tell You

By FXMed Team

Scan Findings That Cause Unnecessary Anxiety

For many Lagos mothers, pregnancy (see our antenatal care guide) scan appointments are a source of anxiety rather than reassurance — either because findings are delivered tersely, technical language isn't explained, or because "something was seen" without adequate context. FXMed believes informed mothers make better health decisions — and that scan findings deserve clear, calm explanation.

Common Findings That Need Context

FXMed tip: If any of this sounds familiar, our Hormone Balance Programme may be exactly what you need. Book a free assessment to find out where your health stands today.

  • Empty gestational sac early in pregnancy — in very early pregnancy (before 6–7 weeks), the embryo may not yet be visible. This is not automatically a miscarriage diagnosis. Repeat imaging in 7–10 days with HCG levels is essential before conclusions are drawn.
  • Low-lying placenta — many placentas that appear low at 20 weeks migrate upward as the uterus grows; most resolve before delivery
  • Short cervix — cervical length below 25mm in the second trimester increases preterm risk; management options include progesterone (see our hormones guide) and cervical cerclage
  • Single umbilical artery — associated with some chromosomal conditions and growth restriction but most babies with this finding are completely healthy
  • Choroid plexus cysts — tiny cysts in the brain seen at 20 weeks; almost always resolve and are typically not clinically significant as isolated findings

When Findings Require Action

Findings that always need specialist review: fetal growth below the 10th centile, abnormal Doppler blood flow measurements, structural anomalies, and signs of placental dysfunction. FXMed helps mothers understand their scan reports and facilitates appropriate referrals when needed.
