Why Lungs Collapse and How Breathing Problems Are Managed
When Breathing Becomes Laboured After Illness or Surgery
If you've noticed persistent breathlessness, reduced exercise capacity, or a feeling of incomplete breath after a major illness, surgery, or respiratory infection — partial lung collapse may be contributing. Atelectasis (collapse of air sacs in parts of the lung) is common and often goes unrecognised until it becomes clinically significant.
Why Lungs Collapse
FXMed tip: If any of this sounds familiar, our Immune Support Programme may be exactly what you need. Book a free assessment to find out where your health stands today.
- Post-surgical complication — the most common setting; anaesthesia impairs the cough reflex and deep breathing that keeps air sacs open
- Airway obstruction — mucus plugging from infections (pneumonia, tuberculosis) blocks airflow to sections of lung
- Prolonged bed rest — shallow breathing during illness or hospitalisation allows dependent lung zones to collapse
- Compression — from a pleural effusion (fluid around the lung), tumour, or enlarged lymph nodes pressing on lung tissue
- Neuromuscular weakness — inability to take deep breaths or cough effectively
Recognising the Symptoms
Mild atelectasis may have no symptoms. More significant collapse causes breathlessness, rapid breathing, reduced oxygen levels, and increased susceptibility to pneumonia in the affected area. Fever following surgery should always raise suspicion for post-operative lung complications.
Respiratory Rehabilitation and Prevention
FXMed's approach to post-illness respiratory recovery includes breathing exercises (incentive spirometry, diaphragmatic breathing), nutritional support for lung tissue repair, and assessment for underlying conditions. We coordinate with pulmonologists for complex cases and provide home-based respiratory monitoring — important in a city where hospital transport can be challenging.
Breathe Fully Again
If breathlessness after illness or surgery is limiting your life, book a respiratory health consultation with FXMed. We can assess your lung function and create a personalised recovery plan.
