Developmental Differences in Nigerian Children: An Early Intervention Guide
Every Child Develops Differently — But Some Need Extra Support
Developmental milestones provide a framework for identifying when a child may benefit from additional assessment and support. In Nigeria, significant stigma surrounds developmental differences — children are often described as "stubborn," "spiritually afflicted," or simply "slow." This framing delays access to the early intervention that changes developmental trajectories.

By 12 months: Not babbling, not pointing, not waving goodbye, not responding to name
By 18 months: No single words, not walking
By 24 months: No two-word phrases, loss of previously acquired language
By 3 years: Not using sentences, significant difficulty with social interactions
Any age: Loss of previously acquired skills is always concerning
What FXMed Investigates
Developmental differences may have identifiable, addressable physiological contributors:
- Hearing loss — undetected hearing impairment is the most common reversible cause of language delay in Nigeria; many children labelled as developmentally delayed simply cannot hear adequately
- Iron deficiency anaemia — directly impairs cognitive and motor development
- Lead exposure — endemic in Lagos near busy roads; a neurotoxin with specific effects on language and cognition
- Thyroid (see our hormones guide) dysfunction — congenital hypothyroidism causes irreversible cognitive impairment if untreated
- Nutritional deficiencies — omega-3 DHA, zinc, B12, iodine all critical for neurodevelopment
