Cauda Equina Syndrome: The Back Emergency That Requires Immediate Surgery
Back Pain That's Different — and Dangerous
Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a spinal cord emergency caused by compression of the nerve roots at the base of the spine, which control the bladder, bowel, and lower limbs. Without emergency surgery within hours, permanent paralysis and incontinence can result.
The Red Flag Symptoms — Know These
- Bladder dysfunction: inability to urinate (retention) or inability to control urination — the most critical symptom
- Bowel dysfunction: loss of bowel control or inability to defecate
- Saddle anaesthesia: numbness or tingling in the inner thighs, perineum, and genitals
- Severe bilateral leg weakness
If you have ANY of these symptoms alongside back pain, go to emergency services immediately. This is a surgical emergency.
Protecting Your Spine Long-Term
While CES itself requires emergency care, spinal health can be optimised through functional medicine. Bone density assessment, vitamin D and K2 optimisation, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and core strengthening all reduce disc degeneration risk. FXMed's Functional Health Analysis includes bone health markers and can design a spine-protective protocol.
