Recurrent Chest Infections and Bronchiectasis: Protecting Damaged Lungs

By FXMed Team

Lungs That Keep Getting Infected

Bronchiectasis — irreversible widening and scarring of the airways from repeated infection and inflammation — is a chronic lung condition that is substantially underdiagnosed in Nigeria. It causes: chronic productive cough (often daily), recurrent chest infections requiring antibiotics multiple times per year, breathlessness, and significant reduction in exercise capacity and quality of life.

Why Bronchiectasis Is Common in Nigeria

FXMed tip: If any of this sounds familiar, our Immune Support Programme may be exactly what you need. Book a free assessment to find out where your health stands today.

Bronchiectasis develops from prior severe or repeated lung damage:

  • Tuberculosis — post-TB bronchiectasis is extremely common; the structural damage TB causes provides a reservoir for ongoing infection
  • Childhood pneumonia — severe or repeated pneumonia in childhood causes airway damage that manifests as bronchiectasis in adult life
  • Whooping cough (pertussis) — historically very damaging to airways in unvaccinated children
  • Foreign body aspiration — particularly in children; a missed inhaled foreign body causes localised bronchiectasis
  • Immune deficiency — primary immunodeficiency causes recurrent severe infections leading to bronchiectasis

Diagnosis

CT scan of the chest (high-resolution) is the diagnostic standard — plain X-ray often underestimates the extent of disease. FXMed facilitates HRCT referral for patients with chronic productive cough and a history of recurrent chest infections.

Management to Reduce Infections and Slow Progression

  • Airway clearance physiotherapy — daily active cycle of breathing techniques reduces mucus colonisation
  • Vaccination — influenza and pneumococcal vaccination reduce infective exacerbations
  • Nutritional optimisation — malnutrition is common and worsens outcomes; protein, zinc, vitamin D, and omega-3 supplementation support immune function
  • Prompt antibiotic treatment of exacerbations with the right antibiotic for identified organisms

Better Management, Better Life

Bronchiectasis cannot be cured, but its progression can be significantly slowed and quality of life dramatically improved. Book a respiratory health consultation with FXMed — we develop personalised management plans and provide home visit (see our what concierge medicine is) support for those with advanced disease.
