Understanding Brain Death: A Guide for Nigerian Families
A Diagnosis That Is Deeply Misunderstood
When a doctor tells a Nigerian family that their loved one is "brain dead," the response is almost universally disbelief — because the body appears to be breathing, the chest is rising, and the heart is beating. Understanding what brain death means requires medical explanation delivered with both accuracy and compassion. FXMed believes that informed families make better decisions and grieve with greater peace.

Brain death is the irreversible cessation of all brain function — including the brainstem, which controls breathing, heart rate, and all vital reflexes. A brain-dead person is legally and medically dead. The chest rising and the heart beating are the result of the ventilator doing the work of breathing; without the machine, breathing would stop immediately. The brain cannot recover from this state.
How Brain Death Is Diagnosed
Brain death is a clinical diagnosis made by senior physicians following strict protocols:
- Known cause of irreversible brain injury must be established
- Potentially reversible causes (sedation, hypothermia, metabolic) must be excluded
- Two independent sets of brainstem reflexes testing by two senior doctors, typically separated in time
- Apnoea test — confirming no spontaneous breathing effort
