Botulism: A Rare but Deadly Food Poisoning Nigerians Should Know About

By FXMed Team

The World's Most Potent Toxin — In Food

Botulism is caused by botulinum toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum — the most potent biological toxin known. Foodborne botulism occurs when this toxin is ingested in improperly preserved foods. While rare globally, it remains a concern wherever traditional food preservation methods are used without proper temperature control — including fermented foods common in Nigerian cooking.

Nigerian Foods at Risk

Botulism thrives in anaerobic (low-oxygen) environments with low acidity. Risk scenarios in the Nigerian context: home-canned vegetables or meat stored at room temperature, fermented locust beans (dawadawa/iru) prepared without adequate acidification or heat, smoked or dried fish in sealed packaging at warm temperatures, and garlic or herbs preserved in oil at room temperature.

Symptoms: Descending Paralysis

Botulism toxin blocks nerve signals to muscles. Symptoms begin 12–36 hours after ingestion: double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing or speaking, dry mouth, descending muscle weakness, and ultimately respiratory failure — the life-threatening endpoint. Suspected botulism is a medical emergency. Seek hospital care immediately.

Prevention

  • Never give honey to infants under 12 months (infant botulism risk)
  • Boil home-preserved foods for 10 minutes before eating if in doubt
  • Refrigerate garlic-in-oil preparations and use within a week
  • When in doubt, throw it out
