Bipolar Disorder in Nigeria: Getting Accurate Diagnosis and Support
Beyond "Madness": Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mood condition characterised by episodes of mania or hypomania (abnormally elevated or irritable mood, reduced sleep (see our sleep health guide) need, impulsivity) and depression. It is not "just mood swings" — it is a neurobiological condition that causes significant disability and carries serious risks if unmanaged. In Nigeria, it is frequently mistaken for spiritual possession, misdiagnosed as schizophrenia, or simply unrecognised.
Types of Bipolar Disorder
FXMed tip: If any of this sounds familiar, our Adrenal Reset Programme may be exactly what you need. Book a free assessment to find out where your health stands today.
- Bipolar I — at least one manic episode (severe enough to impair function or require hospitalisation); depressive episodes usually also occur
- Bipolar II — hypomanic episodes (less severe than full mania) plus depressive episodes; often misdiagnosed as recurrent depression
- Cyclothymia — milder, chronic mood fluctuations that are still functionally significant
Physiological Factors That Worsen Bipolar
- Sleep disruption — the single most powerful trigger for manic and depressive episodes; sleep protection is a primary management strategy
- Thyroid (see our hormones guide) dysfunction — thyroid disease is more common in bipolar disorder and worsens both phases
- Omega-3 deficiency — omega-3s have genuine evidence for reducing depressive episode severity in bipolar disorder
- Vitamin D deficiency — consistently associated with worse mood outcomes across psychiatric conditions
- Inflammatory markers — elevated hs-CRP predicts worse bipolar outcomes
FXMed's Role
We complement psychiatric care by investigating and treating the physiological contributors: thyroid assessment, nutritional panel, sleep evaluation, and inflammatory marker review. Omega-3 supplementation, vitamin D correction, and sleep optimisation all have evidence supporting their use alongside mood stabilisers. Virtual consultations available for privacy.
