Appendicitis: Recognising the Emergency and Understanding Prevention
A Surgical Emergency That Can't Wait
Appendicitis is one of the most common reasons for emergency surgery worldwide. In Nigeria, delayed presentation remains a serious problem: patients endure abdominal pain for days (attributing it to gas, ulcer, or malaria), arriving at hospital only after the appendix has ruptured — a life-threatening complication. Knowing the symptoms that demand immediate hospital attention can save lives.
The Classic Progression
- Dull, diffuse abdominal pain or discomfort around the navel — initially
- Pain migrates to the right lower quadrant of the abdomen (McBurney's point) over 12–24 hours
- Pain worsens with movement, coughing, or pressing and releasing the right lower abdomen (rebound tenderness)
- Nausea, vomiting, and low-grade fever develop
If right lower quadrant pain is severe and persistent — go to hospital immediately. Do not take laxatives or wait to see if it resolves.
Gut Health and Prevention
While appendicitis cannot be entirely prevented, a high-fibre diet, good hydration, and a healthy gut microbiome reduce the formation of fecaliths and gut stasis that predispose to blockage. FXMed's Gut Repair Programme targets gut motility, microbiome diversity, and dietary patterns that support overall colorectal health.
