Albinism in Nigeria: Health Needs Beyond Skin and Eyes

By FXMed Team

Beyond the Stigma — Addressing Real Health Needs

People living with albinism in Nigeria face compounded challenges: profound social stigma and discrimination, and serious, largely unmet medical needs. With an estimated 1 in 5,000 Nigerians having albinism — one of the highest rates globally — the healthcare needs of this community are significant and chronically neglected.

Medical Conditions Requiring Regular Management

  • Skin cancer — the most serious medical risk; without melanin protection, cumulative UV exposure causes squamous cell carcinoma and, less commonly, melanoma. Many Nigerians with albinism develop skin cancer in their 20s and 30s. Daily high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+), protective clothing, and regular skin surveillance are essential
  • Visual impairment — virtually all people with albinism have significant visual challenges: nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), photophobia (light sensitivity), reduced visual acuity, and absence of stereoscopic vision. Appropriate optical correction, tinted lenses, and educational accommodations dramatically improve functional outcomes
  • Vitamin D — paradoxically, many people with albinism avoid sun exposure to protect their skin; combined with melanin absence (which means they don't produce vitamin D efficiently regardless), vitamin D deficiency is common and requires supplementation
  • Mental health — social exclusion, discrimination, and in some regions genuine physical danger creates extraordinary psychological burden; mental wellness support is an integral part of care
